A goniatite is a shelled cephalopds related to the squid and octopus. It first appeared some 390 million years ago, only to become extinct at the end of the Permian period some 251 million years ago. The goniatites all possessed an external shell, which was divided internally into chambers. The creature would live in the largest of the chambers, and the internal chambers will be filled with gas, making the animal buoyant in the water.
